Logitech Announces Harmony IR Extender System

October 28, 2009

The use of infrared (IR) to operate devices with a remote control has always had a few drawbacks, one of which is the requirement for line-of-sight between the remote and the device. However, an open cabinet full of devices and exposed cords and cables doesn’t quite fit into the uncluttered living room that many people prefer these days.

Today, Logitech is pleased to announce the Logitech Harmony IR Extender System. It allows anyone with an existing IR-only remote operate A/V devices hidden inside a cabinet. Now you can finally get the streamlined look you want without having to buy a new remote.

Electronic House Magazine Reviews Next Generation Remote Control Extender

August 25, 2009

Next Generation Remote Control ExtenderThe Next Generation Remote Control Extender is an easy way to turn any remote control that uses standard AA or AAA batteries into an RF remote that may no longer require line-of-sight for reliable operation. Electronic House magazine took a hands-on review of the wireless extender and had this to say:

I turned my back to the A/V to point the remote in the opposite direction. Worked again—so far, so good. I moved into the dining room, where I ordinarily would not be able to turn things on and off. With the Remote Extender, however, I heard the click as I pressed the cable on, and heard and saw the TV respond when I pressed that on. So the device passed my home’s application test.

April 07, 2009

Next Generation Remote ExtenderGary Altunian, the About.com Guide to Stereos just published a quick review of the Next Generation Remote Control Extender and was impressed by both the simplicity and low cost of this solution. Setting up the Next Gen Extender is as simple as changing the batteries in your remote since the RF transmitter is actually one of the batteries that comes in the kit. Obviously this solution is limited to remotes that use AA or AAA batteries but if you have a remote that does you too will be happy with the freedom the RF extender gives you.

The Next Generation Remote Control Extender is an inexpensive solution to turn any IR remote that uses AA or AAA batteries into an RF controller without line-of-sight limitations. The folks at EngadgetHD took a look at this system and had this to say:

In conclusion, if you're looking for a way to use your existing remote throughout the whole home, this solution will fall short if you have any walls in the house (we're guessing you do).
